intro

What is Loop?

Loop is a mental health company that helps people with social anxiety overcome their fears by using person-to-person and AI-simulated conversations to practice social interactions before having to face them in real life.

before the glow-up

Loop was experimenting with 3D Avatars and wanted a more unique option. From early user feedback, people weren’t big fans of the busy interface. NOTE: The was a sprint! Something I had to pitch quick n’ dirty for Loop’s CEO to use in an upcoming investor pitch; the designs below were used for that slide deck, not the final product.

The objectives:

  • Appeal more to a Gen Z user base.

  • Simplify the look to make it easier to find new conversations to join.

This is what the screens looked like when I first started working with them:

starting the makeover

Because Loop’s target audience is Gen Z (specifically, users in their early 20s experiencing social anxiety), I wanted to take a chance on being visually different. Younger demographics are particularly used to being absolutely BOMBARDED by digital images every day, so I wanted to keep their attention by using a mismatch of real photos and illustrated images, all of which followed the same color-blocking pattern so as to not look too chaotic.

the proposal

I ended up with a fun selection of avatars over a simple 2D backdrop with shadows. The focus needed to be on the conversation cards (as shown below) — this iteration of Loop’s product was built around live audio chat rooms, like the Clubhouse app. So I wanted it to be fun without distracting from the utility of the app.
